Dalkeith welcomed Mid Argyll to King's Park for our final National Bowl Pool match and our final home competitive match of the season.
Unfortunately due to injury and unavailability the visitors could only field 11 players, but were here to play!
There was some last minute changes required to the team for Dalkeith to adjust to the numbers and a quick rethink on how to approach a different type of match. But the squad knew what was needed from the match and were determined to gain the points needed to secure our place in the National Bowl Final for the second year running.
The game started at a very high tempo and both sides were trying to use the acres of space available. Mid Argyll looked to have some strong runners and certainly weren't afraid of a tackle and for the first 5 minutes the teams went at each other, scramble defence from both side preventing scores.
However Roche, playing in the backs this week had made some good runs at pace and eventually she got the break she needed and raced in from her own half, converted by McLean.
Roche scored our second try, after some excellent offloading and support from Mcintosh & MacNamara she again was released into space and sprinted in. Converted again by McLean. McLean, who has been in good form in recent games, was next to cross the line, this time converted by Turner.
Bringing up the try bonus point, that put us out of reach in the pool, was MacNamara, who carrying a hand injury aimed to avoid contact. She did this by trying to run through Mid Argyll's biggest players and smashing in to tackles! However she was quickly removed from play for her own good!
Dalkeith were in no mood to take their foot off the gas and despite the game going to 10 a side due to a Mid Argyll injury, the squad kept on going.
Having the benefit of a bench definitely had an impact on our ability to keep the tempo up, and huge credit to Mid Argyll as they fought all the way through the match, never giving up, and scoring 3 tries of their own across the game, but Dalkeith were unstoppable with wave after wave of attack resulting in us running in 16 tries, converting 11 of them between Turner & McLean giving a final score or 102-19 to Dalkeith.
Try scorers; Roche (4), McLean (2), McNamara, McIntosh (4), Brunton (3), Turner, Pittendrigh.
The score line is certainly impressive, however Mid Argyll, in only their second match, can be very proud of the effort they put in, they tackled well and tried to run the ball at every opportunity, a 15 a-side match would no doubt have been a different challenge.
A few mentions to note, well done to Brunton stepping in to 9 for a large part of the second half, to Williamson for her first start at hooker and an impressive first half performance.
Congrats to Louise Pittendrigh making her debut on the wing for Dalkeith and topping it off with a debut try.
Roche & Mcintosh in the centres who racked up a sack full of tries between them.
But player of the match for Dalkeith was Abbie Campbell, stepping in to 10 to replace injured Bell, she had a great game in attack and defence and her aggressive tackling and "encouragement" of the team is outstanding!
Well done to all the players, the first part of our aim has been achieved, we've topped our pool in impressive style. I would expect nothing else from this amazing group.
Next stop Murrayfield!
